A visit to the sculptor Giannis Pappas’ workshop

Giannis Pappas sculptor workshop in Zografou, Athens – courtyard sculptures

A quiet artistic escape within the city

There are places in Athens that gently take you out of time, without asking for attention. One of them is the workshop of sculptor Giannis Pappas, quietly tucked away in Zografou. A small artistic refuge — perfect for a brief escape without plans, or expectations.

This visit took place on a calm afternoon, with Dimitris. One of those moments when all you really want is to walk a little and encounter something real. Something untouched by screens, filters, or haste.

In the courtyard, surrounded by trees and earth, Pappas’ human figures stand as if paused mid-thought. They do not pose or seek attention. They simply exist. Their restrained gestures and calm presence invite you to slow down, almost without noticing.

What moved me most was not only the technique, but the silence. The quiet presence of the sculptures seems to speak more than words could. A raised arm without drama, a seated figure carrying both weight and stillness.

The workshop does not treat you as a visitor who must “see” everything. It allows you to pause, wander, return your gaze. It is one of those places you do not consume — you encounter.

Leaving, I carried the feeling of a short escape not measured in time, but in the space it opens within you. A reminder of how much we need these small pauses — in the city, in daily life, in ourselves.

If you find yourself nearby with a little time to spare, leave it there. Sometimes, that is enough.

Inside the workshop

Beyond the courtyard, what truly makes the visit special is the chance to walk through the sculptor Giannis Pappas’ actual workshop — the very space where he worked every day. It does not feel like a conventional museum, but rather like a place where creation has simply paused for a moment.

Here, one encounters unfinished works, sketches, studies, and the artist’s own tools. Wood, marble, plaster, metal — different materials and textures coexist, along with the distinctive scents of a working studio. The space is tall and imposing, carrying the quiet sense of work still in progress, as if the artist has only just stepped away and might return at any moment.

On the upper floor, the experience continues with another interior exhibition space, where smaller-scale works by Pappas are displayed. This area often hosts temporary exhibitions, offering new ways of reading his work and creating a gentle dialogue between past and present.

Location:
The workshop is located in Zografou, at Anakreontos Street 38, Zografou, Athens.

Useful note:
As this is a workshop and museum space, it is recommended to check opening hours in advance, allowing yourself the time to explore the space at a calm and unhurried pace.

Leaving the space, I felt that this visit was more than a simple artistic stop within the city. It was a quiet reminder of the rhythm that creation asks for — a slow, meaningful rhythm, with room for silence, materials, and thought. And perhaps that is why such small escapes stay with us longer than we expect.
